    "Most people haven't seen this kind of [predatory] behavior in [black] bears because it's very rare" and because they are quickly killed afterward. Yep, that will cut down on reports of black bear predation.

    Good info. VERY interesting that most videos I watch talk about so many things regarding mauling, death, fear, how bears act and etc. All of these videos leave out key info on how to survive a bear attack. These folks talk about being armed, having bear spray, backing away slowly and I could go on and on. They key piece of info they leave out is that no one has died when TWO and preferably THREE are all armed and proficient with firearms and bear spray and powerful sharp knife. I think 100 percent of all deaths were an ALONE person. A bear CAN NOT attack two people (let alone three) at the same time that are armed and proficient with weapons. The key datum above all others is DON"T BE ALONE. GO into bear country ALONE then you could die. Who on this forum would walk through the smoky mountains for 8 hours alone in the pitch dark? How about Kodiak Island? Not even a pro would do that. But he may do it with a group.

    Blackbear safer than dogs😂 I guess this professor needs to go back to statistics 101

    • @BrodyYYC
      @BrodyYYC 9 місяців тому

      statistically speaking they are WAY safer than dogs. That was his point. WAY more people are killed each year by dogs than by bears.

    • @vosoryan
      @vosoryan 20 днів тому

      @BrodyYYC The average person probably encounters hundreds of dogs per year whereas the average person encounters 0 bears per year so those stats are pointless

    Hey does anyone remember that black bear encounter that happened prob like 5-15 years ago in Canada I wanna say Ontario but could be Quebec where fisherman were fishing at some lake and a black bear shows up like a 100yards away but then started stalking the fisherman, the fisherman were backing away but the bear kept closing the gap and was very persistent and this went on for seemed like forever. It happened in some CPP I believe. And I think they were rescued by a passing boat but I don’t think a actual attack happened. If anyone can recall that incident I’m tryin to find the video which I know exists. Thanks. Great video BtW

    I live in Northeast Tennessee and have dealt with black bears often. Mostly shy and quiet but can be aggressive when dealing with a hungry one who can't find it's normal food or mother with cubs. I do disagree with him when he says they are normally "safe" to be around and are safer than dogs. No matter how well fed or calm a bear seems if you are 30 feet from a bear you are still in mortal danger. Not to mention I've beat an aggressive dog before who tried to attack my kids. If it had been a bear that would have ended differently.

    Let's not forget about the idiot that turns their home into a feeding ground to draw the bears in, all the while thinking they're "communing" with nature. They're too stupid to realize that they are putting their selves at risk, but also depraved as to the safety of people living near by that don't want bears rummaging on their property and associating their home with food.

    Who wants to take the chance it doesn't matter why they attack, or how they act, the POINT IS they CAN KILL YOU AND IT DOESN'T MATTER WHY THEY WILL DO THAT.

    No it is not the number of Black Bears vs killings of people, it is the number of people and bear encounters and how many of those result in death.

    The areas I frequent have very limited sight lines. The spray stays in the truck and the handgun is the constant companion. Spray is for tourists areas that bears occasionally visit for food.

    I just had an encounter, really similar to what this guy is describing at the start. Big mature boar, he was a bit skinny, wasn't making any noise, just moving slowly. It was me and a young girl doing forest fire work. We ran into this bear, 20-30m away, made noise, he slowly slowly moved off, not far, but out of sight. So we did an arc around him, relaxed a bit, and continued on. I did break a big stick in case we came across another bear or he came back. I also told my coworker that if we did run into a bear, and it attacked, that she should just run while I beat it with the stick. We ran into a deer along the way, it moved off. We heard some noise, but we assumed it was the deer. 300m later, this bear comes running up to us. I start yelling as loud as I can at the bear. Instantly, he starts slooowly moving across me. Within 15m. Maybe 10m away. He wasnt huffing, wasn't bluff charging, wasn't snapping his jaws. Just slow movements. Meanwhile I'm yelling and smashing shit with the stick, and standing on blowdown, sometimes doing my own, two step, bluff charge. While all this was going on, I got my coworker to call for help, and figure out a bearing to the nearest road. After about 5 minutes or so, he slowly moved away, just out of sight (40m). I'm still yelling and smashing branches. Right when he's out of sight, I take the chance and slowly retreat, and then, after I'm far enough away, move at a quick pace the heck out of there.... Never have I been so afraid. For the first time, I really felt like I was gonna die. A very, very, eerie feeling. But at the time, I was thinking pretty clearly, and I wasn't going down with a fight. I know what you're thinking as you're reading this... Why no bear spray or gun? Well, I was working at building a fireguard, which is somewhat close to a construction site, by an urban area. So I stripped as much weight as I could, along with the bear spray. I got pulled off that job to do some scouting and line locating in the bush, which was right along the fire edge. I thought about my bear spray, but it was in another truck. So I didn't have the option to grab it anyways.... Lesson learned though. ALWAYS expect the worst. And you won't be caught like I was. I truly believe we was lucky. And my yelling and smashing was the only thing that pushed the bear off.

      It would not have been a good idea for your coworker to run while you dealt with the bear.Most likely the bear would’ve run after her because it would’ve been triggered by her flight.

    Fact is bears have 3 things they will do each is different on is attack as a defensive (territorial) the other is flee so yelling standing your ground Makita noise etc can and most likely will detour his actions. But their is one response that you can't detour with out a fight and this is when they hunt you for food nothing you do in this case will save your life except luck this means the bear is not defending it is attacking for food the only stop to a predatory attack is lethal force my experience has only been with territorial responses the only bears that I have had any issues with have been young black bears and big old loner males who are aggressive if threatened or surprised and all bears are dangerous just know that if they are hunting you then you will have to defend your self best way to know this is a hunting bear will not openly show itself till he knows you have to fight or you by chance see him just my experience all wild animals are dangerous especially when you are a lone hiker jogger camper always be willing to defend your self and always make yourself known in bear country .
